Hic sunt dracones is a Latin idiom found in medieval cartography to designate uncharted territories. Painted during the year of the dragon and correlating with the etymology of the word dragon itself, coming from the verb δέρκομαι/ to stare directly into the eye; the figure here stands in the liminal space in between the seen and the unseen. Peeking beyond the door of perception, inspired by the iconic dragon motif of the Watts Chapel entryway.
The plate, held as a rite of passage, materializes the concept of the alchemical vase of art as described by Fulcanelli. A careful and long shaping of the self, liken to a creative process. Uniting both vision and physical realization; inner and outer worlds.
“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite.”
William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, 1790.
